The Sylvensteinspeichersee (Lake Sylvenstein) is situated in the very south of Germany, close to the Austrian border.
The lake is one of the reservoirs that supplies Munich with its fresh water (hence the name 'speichersee' as opposed to 'see' - the German word for lake). The river Isar which is the source of the water life of Munich starts its 90km journey to Munich from here.
We went there on Good Friday 2002, when it was almost 20C in Munich. We assumed that it would be excellent hiking weather – in green grass – but were surprised by the sight of snow. The snow was pretty firm and deep in places, sheltered by the forested slopes around the lake.
