Walchensee, Germany - March 2002

The Walchensee is a reservoir in the very south of Bavaria (Germany), close to the border with Austria. Its one of those feats of Engineering in the mountains, where a Hydro-Electric Power Station is camouflaged into the mountains between two lakes.

Michael and myself did the tour up to the Jochberg (ca. 1600m) above the lake, in a very scenic area. As the mountains are normally a no-go area for hiking in March, we were amazed at the scarcity of snow. However with air temperatures of 15-18C – the snow can only survive in the shaded valleys at these altitudes.
